So, I went and saw a bunch of my friends perform, as a band, in a jazz bar the other night. It was so awesome.
When I first got the Facebook event invite, and I looked at who was playing and the wide variety of jazz they were going to play, I knew I just couldn’t bear to miss it. I hadn’t seen most of them in a while, so that was just an added reason to go, and maybe catch up a bit. I’d never been to a bar like that before. It was pretty packed because it was such a small space, but it didn’t matter. The music was fantastic; they did a great job and I’d love to see them perform again. It was a pleasure to go, not just to hear the beautiful music but also, to support my friends.
As I was sitting there, listening to their groovin’ jazz sound, I thought about how I haven’t really played like that in a while, and I miss it, but hopefully soon I’ll get back into it. I really love playing like them; they were clearly having a fantastic time. I love all sorts of music, but there’s something about the way jazz music swells that fills me with enthusiasm. My favourite is when it is added to other genres of music, or when a song is reworked as a big band piece. Those blast of horns and saxophones in a pop song are what makes it stand out, and what make a lot of them musically unique.
