So, apparently last winter, Clare Bowditch decided that she was going to be happy. Since then, she’s written and released an album about it, and that makes me happy… In case you’ve never heard of her, Clare Bowditch is an Australian singer /songwriter of songs that always have a strong story to them, who’s also done things like interview the Prime Minister Julia Gillard on the side.

I bought the album through her website, and although it arrived ~5 days after it was released, it was a signed copy. It’s kind of strange the way they did it. The CD case was all sealed, but it came with another liner notes booklet, loose, that was signed. Below, I have reviewed the whole of “The Winter I Chose Happiness”, track-by-track in addition to as a whole.

So, a few weeks ago I told you about the plight of Jo, an employee at the House (where I work), whose hard drive in her laptop died. Her data was unrecoverable, and she decided to go to a data recovery specialist. I told you as a lesson in the importance of backing up. But that wasn’t quite the end of her story. Here’s what happened next… Continue Reading

So, if you haven’t been watching The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, this post isn’t going to make much sense to you. But you can fix that by simply devoting the time to watching all (so far) 43 videos. I better give you some context: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is a modern adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, told primarily through the medium of YouTube vlogs (video blogs), as well as though an extensive deluge of various other social media posts, predominantly Tumblr. The other social media is used to explore the story from the point of view of many other characters, some of which are minor in the original narrative.

House Update: Back Up, or Lose!

So, we had a woman come in this week with a company laptop, in which the hard drive had died. For us, it was a simple case of checking it, and getting a new one sent out. But for her, it was a lot more significant. Why? Because she hadn’t been backing up.

RT#M: I’d Read The Manual (if I could)

So, my dad bought a computer the other day for the household. A new desktop from Aldi. And I know what you’re thinking, “Can’t be any good if it came from Aldi,” but that’s not true, and it’s also not the point. The point is that it came with something few other computers (particularly desktops) come with: A manual. Now, to a computer “expert” like you or me, that may not seem like much but to someone whose never used a computer before or is unfamiliar with how to resolve issues, this is pretty handy. And it made me wonder, why don’t more computers come with a manual? Continue Reading

NAS-tastic:The steps to prepare for setting up a NAS

So, my household recently bought a new NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive to replace the one we currently have, as it has been playing up. I’m pretty excited about it because the new one is a more professional type with 2 bays for hard drives. However, this leaves us with the somewhat immense task of actually setting it all up, and copying our data from the current NAS to the new NAS. Continue Reading

So, a few days ago I went and saw the Ace Attorney (Gyakuten Saiban) movie with a few friends. I’m a BIG fan of the video game series, so I was quite excited and looking forward to seeing what they did with it. And I wasn’t disappointed.

** As usual, this review should be spoiler free. But if you’ve already played the games, you already know most of what’s going to happen.** Continue Reading

House Update: The Audit

So, a few weeks ago now, the House’s IT department was audited to make sure that it’s up to scratch. But before the auditor stepped a foot in the building, for week and weeks before, we had been preparing and panicking. And in the end, it wasn’t that big a deal. So why had we been panicking so? So, subnetting is a hard concept to understand. I had to try and grasp it this week for my coursework, and I thought you might be interested hearing about how I came to understand it. Maybe it’ll help you! Continue Reading

Review: The Fault In Our Stars – John Green

So, this week I finally did what most true Nerdfighters and John Green fans did a few months ago: finish The Fault In Our Stars, a.k.a. TFIOS. The worst thing about this was I was one of the 150,000 people that got a preordered, and thus signed, copy of TFIOS so I’ve had absolutely no excuse for not having finished it much earlier. Although, maybe that’s a reflection on the book. If you’d like to read a proper review, read on…
